Magic Hour - Kristin Hannah

I have been so tired of picking out books that suck! Finally I found a good one Saturday at Target. I couldn't set it down and finished it last night. Steve came into the room and I was a complete mess, crying and sniffling. I have never had a book effect me that way. It might not do the same to you, but there was something about it for me. Read it, I am tellin' ya!

DESCRIPTION
Deep in the Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest– nearly one million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. Even in this modern age, much of it remains undiscovered and uncharted. From the heart of this old forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she can give no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past… Until recently, Dr. Julia Cates was one of the preeminent child psychiatrists in the country, but a scandal shattered her confidence, ruined her career, and made her a media target. When she gets a desperate call from her estranged sister, Ellie, a police chief in their small western Washington hometown, she jumps at the chance to escape. In Rain Valley, nothing much ever happens–until a girl emerges from the deep woods and walks into town. She is a victim unlike any Julia has ever seen: a child locked in a world of unimaginable fear and isolation. When word spreads of the “wild child” and the infamous doctor who is treating her, the media descend on Julia and once again her competence is challenged. State and federal authorities want to lock the girl away in an institution until an identification can be made. But to Julia, who has come to doubt her own ability, nothing is more important than saving the girl she now calls Alice. To heal this child, Julia will have to understand that she cannot work alone and must look to others–the people in the town she left long ago, the sister she barely knows, and Dr. Max Cerrasin, a handsome, private man with secrets of his own. Then a shocking revelation forces Julia to risk everything to discover the truth about Alice. The ordeal that follows will test the limits of Julia’s faith, forgiveness, and love, as she struggles to ascertain where Alice ultimately belongs. In her most ambitious novel to date, Kristin Hannah delivers an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the mysterious places in the heart where love lies waiting.

I So 'cited

They are filming. Hooray! Summit Entertainment better not screw this up. I thought the pictures of the cast with Stephanie Meyer were pretty cool. I think that it should be released within the year, hopefully. I am trying my best not to even think of it, cuz then the time goes slower. Plus, as all books-made-into-movies go, it could suck. I hope that it doesn't. I think they have a good Bella in their cast, but I a little worried about Edward. Is he good looking enough? Don't know...

Hawaii, here I come...

Having missed the last couple oppurtunities I have had to go to Hawaii, I am taking this up. My Grandma had a timeshare that I purchased from her from April 18-25. So Steve and I have bought airline tickets for the family - Hawaii, here we come.

Although I can't wait to get to the island, I am in fear of a swimsuit. No seriously!

A few months ago, I accounted for my weightloss on my blog. It proved to be the most effective thing that I have done, I lost 20 pounds in all and have kept it off. Well, I need to lose another 15 before our big trip. So I am going to bore all of you once again to help me with my endeavor. You don't even have to say a word! Just the possibility that someone is checking up on my chocolate intake has proven to help me. I basically have 7 weeks to lose my 15 pounds and fully intend on doing so. I may not feel perfect 15 pouunds lighter, but I know that I will feel a ton better.

So off we go. On Monday, I will be reporting any loss, and hopefully never a gain! Catch you on Monday!

I So Sexy

As gross as this is, I just have to post it. I have been on my feet most of the day and decided to come home and rest my leg this afternoon. Michaela thinks it is so disgusting, so she took another picture. It hurts soooooo bad that I am actually grateful that the bruise is there so that I can prove it! You better believe I am going to milk it the best I can...

Alllllllllmost!

I am almost there! After we fix the table, stools, and fridge we will almost be done. This kitchen looks even better in real life. I am loving the way that it turned out and I think that Cindy is happy too. Worth the big ol' bruiser on my leg. That tile is awesome.

Kiddie Kamera

So while Steph and I do our job, our poor kids have to entertain themselves. Wyatt and Addison have become quite good friends over the past year. They share drinks and food and play their video games together. But today, as I was flicking through my new pictures, I came across these. I was quite impressed with their photography skills. St some point today, they found a way to snatch my camera and go take pictures with it. Quite funny indeed. Addison even made her stuff dog pose for her on the stairs.

"This is my friend Wyatt"
"Isn't he cute?"

"I make him laugh""Here is my puppy"
"Oh, and don't forget me!"
"Here are my mom's tools that don't work and make her say bad words."

This is just not Okay!

Can't wait to get my little hands on this one. Hopefully we will be starting this project next week and I have some serious tricks up my sleeve. I have already picked out window treatments and blinds. And the bathroom, lets not even go there. I will save the wallpaper and make a dress out of it. Holy Smokes. I am losing sleep over these rooms, seriously.

Questions for me:

I can't believe that you can tile, sew, paint etc.! Is there anything you can't do? For those of us who are thinking of doing design work or having design work done would you consider posting how you got started, how much you charge, where did you get all of your talents, how do you get business, how your design process works, etc.?

Thanks for the question. I will answer it the best I can.

I have always had a passion for decorating. Growing up with decorators around me, I just thought it was what all people did. I can remember decorating things in my room as young as 7 or 8. By the time I was 12, I was rearranging furniture, and hanging mirrors. I think that most of my ability comes from exposure.
Of course when I got married and out on my own, we had NO money at all. So I was constantly taking old things, and sometimes new things, and repainting them and trying to fix up our apartments. It drove my husband crazy. He could never understand why I would buy something, perfectly good, and come home and paint it. He soon learned to accept this about me and zipped his pie hole (love ya!).

where did you get all of your talents

As for talents, not so much. I would more or less call them learning experiences. You will never know how to do it unless you try it yourself. I am a firm believer in "hands on". I am passionate about decorating and want things done to my house (and other peoples) that sometimes money can not afford to hire out. So my next best step is to do it myself. It is a little scary at first, but you get more confident the more you do.

how you got started

I got started 6 years ago when I was pregnant with our 3rd baby. I loved all the Pottery Barn Bedding and wanted to buy it for Addison's crib. I was searching Ebay looking for a good deal when I saw all these little switch plates and stuff that people were painting to match Pottery Barn Bedding. They were making a fortune, and their art wasn't even that great! I told Steve I was going to start doing it. He said, but you don't know how to paint ladybugs or flowers, and I told him that it wasn't "real" art, it was whimsical stuff that anyone could do. So I did.

By the time our Addison turned 1, I was running a Ebay business, painting in the upwards of $1500-$2000 a month worth of knobs and letters. My kitchen basically was loaded with wooden knobs and letters for 2 straight years. I soon got to the point where I learned to mass produce my knobs using a transfer paper so that I didn't have to paint them individually. I started really bringing in the dough, but Pottery Barn slammed us Ebayers and shut us down. At the time, I was actually part of a group of 7 woman that all sold different things to accent Pottery Barn's Bedding. Some of them have found loop holes to still sell on Ebay, but it stressed me out too much, so I cried, and then I quit.

But my disease of compulsive decorating was still there and I had no money anymore to do it in my own home, so I started doing it for my friends. Sometimes people would pay me a small fee, like $10 per hour, but most times I did it for free. I learned a lot for the year and 1/2 that I did that. It was so fun and I wanted my friends to be able to have a cute house to enjoy. Plus I really learned how to paint and choose colors. You get good at it after a hundred rooms.

When we moved to Austin I decided no more freebies, if I was going to take time away from my family, I was going to get paid to do it. I found out what companies were charging to paint per square foot and started with that. So basically the painting part is mathematical. I stay very competitive on pricing and include decorating advice to help people choose colors and such. A Sherwin Williams rep can't do that. So it is just an added bonus for people that hire me to paint. Last year I got so busy that I started employing helpers to paint for me. I have had my brother in law Scott work for me and now Lorena will paint for me every so often. Takes major stress of me with trying to focus on my family and kids. Pricing on paint ranges from .45 cents sq. ft. and up. So your average bedroom is going to run about $200. Fortunately it only takes about 3 hours to paint a bedroom, so you can rake it in if you can keep up on the speed.

Starting to get a bit bored with myself, but I will keep going.

On the decorating side: My husband runs an apartment community for a company called Archstone. When we came to Austin, they wanted to remodel the model apartments. They usually pay their designer around $25k to do it, but didn't have the capital budget that year. Steve said that I could do it, so I did. I charged $25 an hour for those apartments, which didn't pan out to be enough. It may seem to be a dream job, but I am telling you, all the running around and taking back, and unloading, and hanging, and sweating - not enough in the end. Once again, learning experience and I was thankful for the opportunity. Plus I got my name out there and next month I am doing a new job for them with a budget of $40K. Hurray!

how much you charge, how do you get business, how your design process works, etc.?

The amount that I charge really varies from job to job. Like I said, painting starts at .45 cents sq ft., but faux finishing can be up to $5 a sq. ft. Especially Venetian plaster, good honk! For decorating, I charge $50 an hour pretty much straight across the board. Although, I will do a 1 time consult for and hour for $100. Just depends. I think it is based on where you live and the demand.

For the most part, I do not advertise. I have a couple times on Craigs list, but that is about it. Everything is word of mouth and somehow I stay very very busy.

It really is a great job because I am able to make my own schedule and, most of all, do what I love to do. But I am not going to glamorize it too much. It is super hard word. I am not even kidding a little bit. It is not at all like doing your own home. You have to please other people. Plus when they are paying for it, they want it perfect! No corner left untucked. It always becomes very tedious by the end of every job. Sometimes to the point of tears, and there has been many. Also, you have to take the risk of messing up someones house. I have been lucky to date, but in the midst of painting, there have been some spills. You need to make sure that you can afford to fix the damage or cover insurance that will fix it for you. Believe me, I am a big liability to myself sometimes. It really is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. I really wasn't going to post thunder thigh, but after writing about my job, I thought it was only fair that you could see the result of this labor intensive job that I have. This just happened today in fact. I must say that I am a clutz, but this could have happened to anyone. I was grouting my back splash and slipped and fell. It is beautiful, huh? It is so swollen right now that it looks like a knee cap on the side of my leg. Disgusting.

Thanks for the questions and comments on my blog. I am eventually going to start a blog only for my business, so I will update you with that. It should be very interesting. I appreciate everyone's compliments. They are very sweet and sometimes not completely deserved. Love you all!

I am soooo TY-RED!

Today was a big day at the Harrison's. I finished putting up the backsplash and finally hung the curtains that I made this past weekend. Everything is really coming together. Finally. It has been such a process. Tomorrow, I will start grouting, and that is going to make that tumbled marble look even better. Can you believe the improvement on this kitchen. All for under $3000...Amazing what you can do.

Steph picked out all the furniture. What a great job she did! I have of course been dilegently shopping for home accents pieces and have been having a blast. I am going to go buy more this afternoon. This furniture looks amazing. Still need some work on the walls and stuff, but we are getting closer.

Just the update. Gotta love this job when it is this fun. Hard work though. I am so tired and sweaty and just a few swear words came out of Steph and I's mouths today. I hate hanging hardware. Ugh. I need a hot handyman to follow me around and do all the laborious things.

Bye to the cranberry, nice color, but we need to feel refreshed. We also painted the ceiling:
Don't you feel clean? Hurray!Dark and dreary, sheers cause cancer...
Happy day, can't wait for some new window treatments, they are almost ready.Need I say anything?
Still have to arrange above the cabinets, but so mucho better...
Still quite a bit of work here, but man at least that blue plaid couch is gone. Holy Majoli.

Good Bye Forest Green and White Formica!

Can I tell you how exciting this is? There is nothing better than getting rid of forest green bathroom tiles and white formica. Seriously, better than an Herbal Essance's Commercial, if you know what I mean.
This is a great way to update your kitchen with a budget. We replaced the white formica with what is called "black star granite". It looks like granite, but for a fraction of the cost. We are doing the backsplash in an awesome tumbled marble, and of course, you have to antique those old oak cabinets. Hello! We also added some hardware (purchased on Ebay) and got rid of that
fabulous wallpaper. Do you think that they will miss that?

Oh, and don't forget the lighting. New lights were a must. Jared, my electrician, put in under cabinet lighting and a new fixture above the table (which will also be replaced). Oh, I can breath. No more brass or flat paint or wallpaper! Hurray...

Still so much work to do, but I had to send the update. My oh my...

Oasis

Lunch at the Oasis... If you haven't been up there lately, this is the place to go. This restaurant (for all those reading that don't know about the Oasis) is a landmark to Austin. It sits over Lake Travis and has awesome views and sunsets at night. It is pretty famous, but was burnt down a couple years ago during a lightning storm.

Well, they have rebuilt and it looks amazing. I grew up going to the Oasis and have many fond memories of it. It is really something now. I recommend going there for nachos and keylime pie. There food can sometimes be unpredictable. I wish we would have taken better pics. It was really pretty, just a little bright, windy, and cold on the day we went -- hence the squinty eyes in the pics.
